Morning Dropoff Woes at WC

August 29th, 2006 by mmckay

The morning dropoff has been steadily improving each day since the beginning of school.  Parents are encouraged to arrive early for the next week to make sure your student is not late.  Some things may help when dropping off your student:  pull all the way up to the last drop off area sign before letting your student out and have all bookbags and items ready to go with student.  When pulling off from the dropoff area please stay close to the right hand side of the exit way.  Keeping to the right hand side will allow room for buses pulling into the parking lot from the east end of the campus.  Please be patient with us, I promise it will get much quicker and smoother within the next week.  Even though it does take a little while, please do not result to dropping off on Country Club Road.  We cannot ensure the safety of your child if dropped off in locations other than the specified dropoff area.

This post is not specifically about dropping off students in a safe manner but it is about students getting to school safely. My daughter just got on her bus 10 minutes ago at 6:35. It is pitch black outside, not a trace of light anywhere. I thought 6:45 was early enough in the past few years but when she was told to be at the bus stop at 6:30 this year I couldn’t believe it.

My daughter was struck by a car crossing our street to her bus last January- it was also, surprise surprise, pitch black and foggy. And this was during daylight savings time.

My daughter has tried waiting on the porch til the bus approaches (we are lucky enough to live on the corner) but sometimes it is so dark, she is afraid the driver will not see her or drive off as she is rushing to get on the bus. So she and her fellow riders stand- in the pitch blackness of morning, I can only see the reflective strip on her bookbag when her bag is to me.

I hate to think that I have to walk her to the bus stop and keep an eye on her at 17 years of age but there are all kinds of reasons this is not SAFE.

I realize my child is not the only one in this situation and this has been going on for years and years. However, I want to know why school cannot start at a little more reasonable time so that even without daylight savings time our children are not standing beside a road in pitch black darkness to get on a bus. Would it really hurt to move school start time to 8:30 and get out to 3:30? Elementary and middle school children are probably in this boat somewhat too.

I am copying this to Dr. Lenker as I know this is not something specific to West Carteret nor is it something that West carteret can do anything about on its own. I am also copying this to Mr. Patrick’s attention as well.

I appreciate the the forum available for me to voice my concerns and hope this is not just shrugged off as some worrywart parent with nothing else to do. I am truly afraid for our children’s safety especially when I think about where this goes in the future.

Our county is growing, what time will they have to get on the bus in the future- 6:15, 6:00, 5:45= where does it end?

    Thank you
