Dress Code–Protecting Instructional Time at WC

August 29th, 2006 by mmckay

The dress code at West Carteret High School has changed this year and the patriots have lived up to the expectations.  During past years, the dress code at West Carteret has been enforced when pushed.  This year we really wanted to protect the instructional time for all students at WC.  One may ask, how are you protecting instructional time with a dress code?  Well, let me help you understand.  In the past, if a student was improperly dressed, they would be given the opportunity to change or get other clothing from a locker.  Many times the student would go to the locker and get a sweatshirt or other “cover up” item.  This interrupted the class twice…once when the teacher addressed the issue and then again when the student returned to class.  That was not a terrible issue, but we found that the same student would many times be sent out again during the next class period because the “cover up” item had found its way back to the locker or bookbag between classes.  If you look at four classes and a student possibly being sent out four times, one can see how something had to change.  Student expectations have been clearly shared with all students through student assemblies and advisory team teachers reviewing the student handbook.  I am proud to say that the students of WC have done a GREAT job of living up to the expectations.  The dress of our students is remarkably improved over that of previous years.  Unfortunately, we have had to send some students home for the rest of the day due not complying with the dress code…but these have been VERY few.  We thank the students and parents of West Carteret for helping us with this issue.

Morning Dropoff Woes at WC

August 29th, 2006 by mmckay

The morning dropoff has been steadily improving each day since the beginning of school.  Parents are encouraged to arrive early for the next week to make sure your student is not late.  Some things may help when dropping off your student:  pull all the way up to the last drop off area sign before letting your student out and have all bookbags and items ready to go with student.  When pulling off from the dropoff area please stay close to the right hand side of the exit way.  Keeping to the right hand side will allow room for buses pulling into the parking lot from the east end of the campus.  Please be patient with us, I promise it will get much quicker and smoother within the next week.  Even though it does take a little while, please do not result to dropping off on Country Club Road.  We cannot ensure the safety of your child if dropped off in locations other than the specified dropoff area.
